How To Know What Oil Viscosity Your German Car Needs

German cars are particular about engine oil, and viscosity is only part of the specification. A BMW that calls for 0W-30, a Mercedes-Benz that uses 5W-40, and an Audi that requires 0W-20 can all have very different oil standards behind those numbers.
That is where drivers get into trouble. They see the correct viscosity on the bottle and assume the oil is right for the car. On many German vehicles, we also need to verify the manufacturer approval, engine type, model year, and sometimes even the exact engine code before pouring anything in.
Start With the Factory Requirement for Your Exact Engine
The owner's manual is a good starting point, but we also check the service information for the exact vehicle. German manufacturers often use several engines in the same model line, and their oil requirements can change from one engine to another.
At our shop, we specialize in German vehicles, so we do not choose oil based only on what worked in an older version of the same car. A newer BMW 3 Series can require something completely different from one built several years earlier.
The safest approach is to match the engine, model year, and factory oil approval. That keeps us from relying on a generic oil chart that does not account for changes in engine design.
The Numbers Tell You How Thick the Oil Is
An oil labeled 0W-30 or 5W-40 is describing viscosity, which is basically how the oil flows at different temperatures.
The first number relates to how the oil behaves when the engine is cold. A lower number generally means the oil flows more easily during startup. The second number tells us how the oil behaves once the engine reaches operating temperature.
That does not mean thicker oil is better protection. Modern German engines use tight internal clearances, variable valve timing, turbochargers, and electronically controlled oil systems. The engine was designed around a certain range of oil flow and pressure, so switching to a heavier oil just because the car has more miles isn't always a good idea.
Manufacturer Approval Is Just as Important as Viscosity
This is where German cars are different from many vehicles drivers have owned before.
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and other German manufacturers use their own oil approval systems. The bottle can show the correct viscosity and still be the wrong oil if it does not meet the required approval.
Those approvals cover things such as:
- Deposit control
- High-temperature protection
- Turbocharger performance
- Compatibility with emissions equipment
- Oil life and oxidation resistance
- Wear protection
When we service a German engine, we verify the approval instead of choosing oil because the label says European Formula. That wording alone does not tell us whether the oil meets the exact standard the engine requires.
Turbocharged German Engines Need the Correct Oil
Turbochargers put a lot of heat into engine oil. The oil lubricates the turbo shaft and bearings while carrying heat away from the center housing.
That makes the correct viscosity and oil specification especially important. Oil that does not handle heat properly can leave deposits in the turbocharger's oil passages. Oil that flows too slowly can also work against the engine during startup.
We see another issue when drivers stretch oil-change intervals while using an oil that was never approved for the vehicle in the first place. That combination gives the engine even less protection.
Regular maintenance with the correct oil is one of the simpler ways to protect an expensive turbocharger and the rest of the engine.
Do Not Change Viscosity Just Because the Engine Has More Miles
An older German car can develop oil consumption, leaks, or lower oil pressure as it wears. That sometimes leads people to pour in a thicker oil hoping it will solve the problem.
It can change the symptom, but that does not mean it fixed anything.
If a Mercedes is using oil or a BMW has developed a pressure warning, we want to know why. Valve cover leaks, filter housing leaks, worn seals, crankcase ventilation problems, turbocharger wear, and internal engine wear all need different repairs.
During an inspection, we assess the engine's condition before recommending any change from the factory viscosity. In many cases, staying with the correct approved oil is still the right choice even at higher mileage.
Climate Can Affect Which Approved Viscosity Makes Sense
Some German manufacturers approve more than one viscosity for the same engine. When that happens, temperature and operating conditions can help determine which approved option is the better fit.
A car that sees very cold winters has different startup demands from one that spends its life in hot weather. Heavy highway use, towing where applicable, and repeated high-temperature driving also change how hard the oil works.
The keyword is approved. We choose between oils the manufacturer allows, not make up our own viscosity because the weather changed.
If the engine has only one specified viscosity and approval, that is what we use unless factory service information says otherwise.
Check What Was Actually Installed at the Last Service
If you recently bought a used German car, do not assume the previous oil change was done correctly.
Receipts are helpful because they can show the viscosity and oil brand that went into the engine. If the paperwork only says synthetic oil with no specification, we do not really know what is in there.
Starting fresh with the correct oil and filter gives you a known baseline. From that point forward, keep records of the viscosity and approval used at every service.
